How has the function of brand manager established itself as the dominant referent marketing organizational model? The first brand manager appeared nearly a century ago at Procter & Gamble. Since then, a vast majority of companies have put in place brand managers to manage their brands and products, despite recurring criticism. With digital transformation and big data, do companies still need them? New specialist positions emerge and challenge the generalist position of brand managers. At the same time, the need for coordination and strategic vision is stronger than ever. Brand managers could even see their role strengthened, provided they reinvent themselves as they have done for nearly a century.
